Structural Dissociation
What is Structural Dissociation?
The Theory of Structural Dissociation is a research-based framework developed by Onno van der Hart, Ellert Nijenhuis, and Kathy Steele that helps us understand how trauma shapes our personality and sense of self. When we experience overwhelming or traumatic events, our minds can divide into different "parts" as a way of surviving. Structural Dissociation is a structured, phase-based approach that helps you understand those parts and supports your brain and body in healing at a pace that feels safe.
Rather than seeing symptoms like anxiety, emotional numbing, or intense reactions as random, this framework helps us understand that those experiences are organized and purposeful. They are your mind and body's way of protecting you.
One of the earliest phases of this work focuses on building stability and grounding skills so that you feel safe and supported before any deeper work begins. You and your counselor will move through this process at your own pace, and you will never be asked to share more than you are ready to share.
What does Structural Dissociation most effectively treat?
Structural Dissociation guides treatment for the following mental health experiences:
Complex trauma (C-PTSD)
PTSD and trauma related symptoms
Dissociative disorders
Chronic feelings of emotional numbness or shutdown
Intense or unexpected emotional reactions
Anxiety rooted in traumatic experiences
Feelings of being disconnected from yourself or your body
At Cooper Counseling Center, we use this framework because it offers a compassionate and thorough understanding of how trauma lives in the body and mind, and provides a clear, gentle, and well-paced path toward healing and reconnection with yourself.
